Abstract:
Tests were carried out on 22 150 x 150 x 200 mm (6 x 6 x 8 in.) concrete corbels reinforced with steel fibers to estimate the improvement in shear properties due to fiber addition. Parameters varied and included fiber content and shear span-to-depth ratio, but only vertical loading was used during testing. The results indicate considerable improvements in first crack and ultimate shear strengths and toughnesses of corbels reinforced with steel fibers over those with no reinforcement. The efficiency of the fibers increased when the shear span-to-depth ratio was decreased. It was concluded that the use of steel fibers as a secondary reinforcement could be an attractive alternative to stirrups.
