Abstract:
A brief survey of computerized methods for mat design is given with particular advantages and disadvantages of the three common discrete element methods: the finite difference, finite grid, and finite element methods. The modulus of subgrade reaction (ks) is considered in some detail both in obtaining reasonable initial design estimates and simple methods to couple node effects. Coupling has been one of the most serious criticisms of using the modulus of subgrade reaction in mat design. It is also shown how to adjust (ks) for consolidation settlements. A mat example which was published earlier by ACI is reanalyzed to illustrate the effect of the simple coupling procedures outlined. Several tables are given both to illustrate the particular validity of the finite grid method and for use in the coupling procedure.
