Abstract:
Underground petroleum storage tanks in 10,000-barrel and larger sizes have been in use since World War II, and possibly earlier. The tanks are usually constructed of steel, concrete, or both. Most of them are located at military installations throughout the world. The high cost of constructing the tanks underground can be justified by the military's need to provide secure storage. Often prestressed, the concrete tanks could be cast-in-place or precast. Six such underground fuel storage tanks were planned, designed, and constructed at the Defense Fuel Support Point, U.S. Naval Air Station, Adak, Alaska.
