Abstract:
Presents a procedure that uses stirrup effectiveness in the shear design of reinforced concrete beams. The procedure uses the current ACI Building Code approach but takes into account the apparent enhancement of stirrup contribution to the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams due to stirrup dowel action, which is not currently addressed by the ACI Building Code. Comparisons are made between ACI and British Standards Institution code approaches to shear design, as well as to a proposed stirrup effectiveness method. Results based on tests done at the University of Connecticut are presented, which show that the proposed method produces a design which is an improvement over the current ACI Building Code provisions.
