Abstract:
Describes the precast elements used in the five bridges in the 15.5 mile (25 km) long causeway between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Precast concrete box girder segments 13 ft (4 m) long were used in the main navigation span. Single-cell precast box girders 216 and 112 ft (66 and 34 m) long were used in the other spans. Precast concrete piles, pile caps, and grids for mass concrete were used in the foundations. The Bahrain Causeway is the largest bridge project carried out in the Middle East and one of the longest sea crossings in the world.
