Abstract:
During the summer of 1987, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville developed a program titled "Planning Ahead for Science and Engineering (PASE)." This program is targeted to academically qualified minority and women high school students entering their senior year. It is designed to expose them to possible career opportunities in selected science and engineering fields. To illustrate the field of construction and civil engineering, a modified form of the ACI Student Beam Contest was used, and it proved to be an extremely popular project.
