Abstract:
Describes experimental studies and the first application of a method to precool concrete to control thermal cracking in mass concrete. The method involves injecting a liquid nitrogen to freeze sand (chill the sand below the freezing point of water) before mixing it with the other concrete components. The method is shown to be practical in terms of production and quality of both frozen and cooled concrete, placing of concrete, and the cooling efficiency of liquid nitrogen.
