Abstract:
Describes a study of the optimization of mix designs for concretes subjected to an 18-hr steam curing regime. The test results show that concretes with a water-to-cementitious materials ratio of 0.45 can perform very differently, particularly in their resistance to chloride ion intrusion. For the mixes tested, those containing silica fume with or without slag performed better than those using only slag as the supplementary cementing material. However, under different conditions of curing and with a different selection of materials, the relative performance of the two admixtures may also be different.
