Abstract:
Polymer concrete overlays are used frequently to prevent the penetration of deicing materials into reinforced concrete bridge decks. The physical properties of polymer concrete overlays can be drastically different from those of portland cement concrete decks. Presents a comparison of basic engineering properties for polymer and portland cement concretes, followed by a study of two representative bridge deck/overlay models subjected to a variety of temperature loads to determine the internal stresses. Study results indicate that, in extreme cases with wide temperature ranges and stiff bridge girders, polymer concrete overlays may be susceptible to cracking.
