Abstract:
Discusses the economy of and ways of using very high strength concrete with reference to current codes of practice in Australia and North America, which do not address using concrete strengths as high as 120 MPa (17,300 psi). The ductility of this material is not the same as concrete of lower strength, and research is suggested that may lead to code revisions to include its use. The use of steel tubes filled with concrete is shown to be an economically attractive method of column construction, and it is postulated that this method is the logical first step in the use of the high-strength material.
