Abstract:
The paper outlines the use of four products that lead to high-performance concretes of various types: cathodic protection for high corrosion resistance; silica fume for high strength, durability, and placing qualities; steel fibers for high toughness; controlled permeability formwork for high surface quality. The mechanisms by which each of the products work are given and applications are discussed. Performance enhancement and cost implications are given. By showing that a cost saving can result through the use of HPCs in certain applications and by showing that acceptance of new technologies is growing in the inherently conservative construction industry, the paper concludes that these products will be adopted at an increasing rate
