Abstract:
Preliminary testing was carried out on six reinforced concrete specimens designed to replicate actual restraint conditions of a column at the beam/slab and column intersection to investigate the compressive strength of the column at the junction, especially when there is a difference in strength between the column and floor systems; the former is usually higher than the latter. Results indicate that concrete strength within the joint is enhanced by confinement of the surrounding beam/slab system. In two of these specimens, the effect of bending moments in beams framing into the column that are being transmitted through the column are also simulated to investigate their effect on column strength.
