Abstract:
The influence of volume changes on the properties of cement-based materials is explored from the perspective of materials science. Volume changes at the microstructure level are complex both because of large variations in the composition of the paste components at this level, and because local volume changes in one small area may be large while in other small areas, they may be small. In the same vein, damage within the microstructure may not be related directly to bulk dimensional changes. The bulk dimensional change represents average volumetric changes of the structure, even though these changes might only occur in isolated areas of the microstructure. These microstructure-property relationships are illustrated here primarily for drying shrinkage, but the approach can be extended to other relationships.
