Abstract:
Potential durability issues associated with limestone powder substitution for cement are reviewed. As functions of starting water-cementitious material ratio (w/cm) and degree of hydration. In mixtures with low w/cm, studies indicate that autogenous deformation and propensity for early-age cracking can be significantly reduced by using coarser limestones as a cement replacement. Also for lower w/cm mixtures, mixtures with limestone powder substitution for cement are expected to have diffusion rates that are similar to rates for mixtures using only cement. The authors assert that increased limestone replacement for cement in low w/cm mixtures is a viable, but underused solution for sustainable construction.
