Abstract:
The design of a statically indeterminate bent cap is presented. The cap resists six concentrated loads and is supported on four columns. Analysis, design, and detailing are all presented. Each of these steps is based on the ACI 318-08 Appendix A Strut-and-Tie Modeling (STM) provisions. Two load cases are considered and the controlling forces in the STMs are used to develop the final design. The objective of the example problem is to help familiarize engineers with the basic STM procedure through a fairly simple beam design.
