Abstract:
Accurately monitoring concrete maturity can be critical on large construction projects. To determine the temperature of the concrete after it has been placed, a system containing radio frequency identification tags with built-in sensors, as well as handheld readers and software to interpret the collected data were used during the construction of the Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, CA. The collected data allowed significant reductions in the construction schedule relative to estimates based on the concrete mixture properties and ambient conditions. Since its installation at the onset of the 3-year project, the system paid for itself three to four times over.
