Abstract:
Two different methdos are usually considered for the finite element modelling of cracking in concrete structures: the smeared and discrete crack approaches. The former method (""smeared"") modifies the constitutive matrix of the cracked elements, while the latter (""discrete"") redefines the finite element mesh and connectivities. This work describes a discrete crack model for the non-linear finite element analysis of concrete structures under plane-stress conditions. The model implements special finite elements in order to take into account the different mechanisms of stress transmission in cracked concrete: bond aggregate interlock and dowel action.
