Abstract:
This paper discusses the possibilities offered by prestressed concrete as a construction material in making tanks for storage of liquids at very low temperature. Particular design conditions for metallic members of the tanks are also considered. Emphasis is made on the relevance of actual testing procedures to select and control materials for low temperature prestressed concrete. Thermal expansion of concrete under load, measurement of elongation of steel tendons at low temperature, significance of notches on steel tendons and thoughness of anchorages are, among others, some of the analyzed tests.
