Abstract:
The procedures employed in the construction of building fragility curves are described. A five storeys framed building has been designed considering the seismic actions given in the Spanish code and Eurocode 8 for a low seismicity zone, like the case of Barcelona, Spain. A Monte Carlo simulation generating 100 samples for each variable has been carried out in order to take into account the uncertainties in the mechanical properties of the materials. Using a non-linear static analysis, the capacity spectra are obtained. Using also the demand spectra, the performance points of the building are obtained for several seismic intensity levels quantified by the peak ground acceleration. The fragility curves are then built, which indicate the probability of reaching or exceeding a certain damage state, given a seismic demand. The results obtained show that for accelerations near to 20% of gravity, the building has a probability of about 40% of collapse, due to its low ductility.
