Abstract:
The new expressway that by-passes Talavera de la Reina on the south crosses the River Tagus over a cable-stayed bridge. With a 318-m span over the main channel of the river, it has become one of the city's most distinctive features. Its white high-strength concrete pylon towers 192 m over the river on a slant offset by two planes of back stays. A lift running along its entire length affords access to the lookout at the top.Measuring 36 m wide and 2.75 m deep, the deck comprises two carriageways separated by a central reserve and two walkways / bicycle lanes. Structurally, it is a white, high-strength, semi-hollow concrete slab, built using local materials. The bridge approach, a nine-span, 408-m long curved viaduct, crosses the flood plain of the river. Its seven centre spans measure 48 m each and the two end spans 36 m.
