Abstract:
ICON is an Austin, TX based construction technology company that has developed the Vulcan Construction System, a large-scale 3D printing system to rapidly and efficiently construct buildings and structures from cementitious materials using digital design files. To date, ICON has printed 16 homes with proprietary software, materials, and hardware and executed on numerous projects domestically as well as internationally in Mexico. Some of the notable projects ICON has completed include the first permitted 3D printed home in the United States, the world’s first 3D printed community, and the world’s first printed homes in a seismic zone. Scaling the use of a technology is a challenge that differs significantly from the development of a proof of concept. In this presentation, we will explore some of the challenges and opportunities that emerge when beginning to scale.
