Abstract:
The performance history of concrete overlays was assessed through a review of existing literature and interviews with practitioners in many different states. Comprehensive reports from states including Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota have analyzed the performance of a large set of concrete overlay projects, including all different overlay types and with varying traffic levels. Metrics used to characterize performance included condition indexes and ratings, International Roughness Index for smoothness, and faulting. Practitioners in those states and others have reported good performance of concrete overlays overall, while detailing design- and construction-related challenges that have led to early distresses on some projects.
