Abstract:
In areas of very high ground motions, seismic isolation of the LNG tank can be an appropriate solution to reduce the lateral forces for which the tank is designed. This presentation will use experience from a project in the US to highlight the challenges of complying with 49 CFR 193. Applicable codes are not absolutely clear in 49 CFR 193 and FERC guidance and the starting assumption was that design would need to comply with ASCE 7-05 which has seen significant development in terms of both the analysis and design of seismic isolated structures and soil structure interaction. The presentation will outline the final approach proposed to FERC and will conclude with the opportunities for improvements in the analysis and design of seismically isolated tanks which are supported by recent code developments in the US.
