Abstract:
Several buildings were demolished after damage to piles in the 1995 Kobe earthquake, 2011 Tohoku earthquake, and 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The Japanese engineers and researchers started to study the ultimate flexural/shear behavior including load carrying capacity and deformation capacity of piles and foundations to use buildings continuously even after severe earthquakes. The talk introduces recent Japanese efforts to build codes based on experimental data on large scale concrete piles and foundations so that engineers can use performance-based design concepts for foundation structures.
