Abstract:
Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) superstructures utilize prefabricated elements and closure joints in order to optimize the construction process. This research project investigates the usage and performance of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) as the joint material and seeks to develop closure joint material and design specifications. Due to UHPC exhibiting high compressive strength (approx. 21 ksi at 28 days and varies from 9 ksi to 14 ksi at 1 day) and demonstrating great bond strength; the comprehensive testing program includes shear and flexural performance evaluation of the closure joint panel at both 24 hours and post 28 days. Initial test results show that the 24-hour specimens with the UHPC closure joint exhibit comparable moment strength to the control specimen. It is expected that the post 28-day closure joint specimens will exhibit better results that will allow for simplified reinforcement configurations and faster construction times without sacrificing strength and durability.
