Abstract:
A new proposed qualitative flexural model including the influence of debonding between mortar and steel wire shows that the well-known plane deformation assumption leads to an underestimate of the ultimate moment capacity of weldmesh ferrocement. In the light of this, a quantitative model based on rectangular stress distribution and ultimate steel strength has been used for predicting moment capacities of specimens in normal and corrosive environments, and this has shown to be more reliable, more economical and simpler. It is also demonstrated that the crack width is not the dominant criterion of design even if both the volume fraction and specific surface of reinforcement are lower than the limitations specified by ACI Committee 549.
