Abstract:
This field and laboratory evaluation of a repaired bridge deck in Southern Illinois is of interest for two reasons: it represents the first use by the Illinois Department of Transportation of a silica fume concrete bridge deck overlay, and provides a direct comparison of the field performance of silica fume concrete and ordinary dense concrete overlays placed by the same contractor. After more than eight years in service, both concretes have performed well. The silica fume concrete was found to have very low chloride penetrability.
