Abstract:
Incorporation of fly ash together with portland cement as a cementitious ingredient in concrete is a common practice in many countries nowadays. In many cases, only the fine fraction of the fly ash is used due to its superior pozzolanic activity, while the coarse fraction (amounting to more than half of the total output of the precipitation process) is rejected. The present study considers the possibility of efficient use of large quantities of the coarse fraction of fly ash from bituminous coal in precast concrete, and of the fine fraction as well. Results show that under thermal curing conditions the coarse fraction contributes significantly to the strength of concrete from 1 day on wards, thereby entailing substantial saving in cement with the attendant economic advantages to the concrete producer.
