Abstract:
The paper deals with an approach to the problem of gross errors in realization of building structures. The probabilistic model of the structure is extended to provide for the higher risk of failure due to possible errors. Four basic means of control of the occurrence rate and magnitude of the abnormal cases are discussed: inspection and checking, proof loading, adjustment of code safety factors, and error-proof design. It was found that due to the variety of gross errors in number and magnitude the most efficient approach is on an individual basis, one error at a time. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the influence of some possible errors on structural reliablity.
