Abstract:
Sustained load tests in torsion on four concrete beams together with short-time torsion tests on the four companion specimens are reported in this investigation. Of the four specimens tested under sustained torsion, two specimens were of plain concrete, one without prestress and the other with axial prestress. The remaining two sustained load tests in torsion were carried out on specimens symmetrically reinforced with non prestressed longitudinal bars and closed stirrups, one without prestress and the other with axial prestress. The objective was to study the effect of prestress on the ultimate strength and behavior of plain and reinforced concrete specimens in sustained torsion.
