Abstract:
The effect of eccentric loading on plain concrete block masonry walls was studied in a program of tests on prisms and short walls. Some walls contained joint reinforcement; others contained none. The failure mode for the walls changed from vertical splitting to crushing at an eccentricity of loading in the order of l/20 times the wall thickness. Failure loads for walls containing joint reinforcement were lower than for walls without joint reinforcement.
