Abstract:
Tests on standard concrete cylinders are described in which their axial strain was measured while their curved surface was subjected to fluid pressure without the use of an intervening membrane. The main program describes the results of triaxial tests carried out on specimens subjected to axial compression in addition to fluid pressure applied to their bare curved surface. A single plane of fracture is shown to occur across the cylinder axis. In the triaxial tests it is demonstrated that this fracture can be achieved in stress and strain conditions which present a paradox in relation to the customarily accepted behavior of materials. The background and consequences of this investigation are discussed.
