Abstract:
Drying shrinkage is one of the major causes of the premature deterioration of thin bonded concrete repairs. Fortunately, the shrinkage-induced tensile stresses can be relaxed by creep, and it is quite probable that the good performance of many superficial repairs is due to this phenomenon. This article summarizes the results of a research program carried out to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of concrete in tension. It also briefly describes the results obtained with a simple mathematical model designed to calculate the stresses and cracking potential in thin superficial repairs. Finally, suggestions are made concerning the selection of repair materials in view of dimensional compatibility.
