Abstract:
Openings are provided in the bottommost story of multistory buildings to facilitate the parking of vehicles, which will lead to considerable reduction of the lateral load-carrying capacity of the structure. To overcome this reduction in load-carrying capacity of an infilled frame, a modified two-bay, five story, brick infilled frame with bracing in the openings at the bottommost story for parking was tested under static, lateral, reversed, and cyclic load. The results of this investigation show that the reduction in load-carrying capacity of the infilled frame with openings could be compensated for by providing additional inclined members and by increasing the reinforcement and cross-sectional area of the columns. Such additional members could be treated as one of the structural member.
