Abstract:
Singly reinforced bending members analyzed by the ultimate strength method are considered. An equation for the optimum ratio of steel to concrete has been derived where the cost of steel, concrete, forming, and the cost of increasing building height in order to house the beam are included in the derivation. To design a bending member, the optimum ratio of steel is found and used as a starting point to find the remaining member dimensions. [[Author]
