Abstract:
An investigation is reported on the cracking behavior of uniformly loaded, two-way concrete slabs reinforced with deformed welded wire fabric and clamped at the boundaries. An empirical expression obtained from the results of tests on 32 square slabs is presented to enable the design engineer to predict crack width. Crack width is shown to be a function of two major geometrical parameters, the grid index and the reinforcement stress, and is also a function of the cover factor. In addition, it is shown that the magnitude of the grid index is an indicator of the crack pattern to be expected at loads from 50 to 80 percent of the ultimate. Supplemental tests on two slabs reinforced with undeformed welded wire fabric indicate no significant difference in behavior within the range of values tested.
