Abstract:
Bond strengths of hot dip galvanized reinforcing bars were investigated in short-time tests. Influence of the chromate content in the cement, chromate admixture to the fresh concrete, and chromatizing of the galvanized bars were studied in pullout tests and tests of reactivity of the zic coating in concrete. Three brands of Norwegian standard portland cement, two of which had relatively low chromate content, were tested. For one of the cements with low chromate content, it was found that a great reduction in bond strength resulted when galvanized bars were used. However, no simple relation between the chromate content in the cement and bond reduction andI reactivity of. the zinc coating could be stated. A chromate addition to the fresh concrete and especially a chromatizing of the galvanized bars eliminated the reduction in bond strength.
