Abstract:
Discusses the interaction between walls and slabs in cross-wall structures. The bending of the slab along the line of the walls, and the resistance it offers to the wall rotation, is examined. The purpose of the investigation is to determine accurate values for the interaction bending stiffness of the slab for use in conjunction with one of the existing methods for calculating the horizontal stiffness or vertical load redistribution in cross-waII systems. The slab is analyzed as an elastic plate by using the finite difference method in the form of a generalized computer program. The results, which are presented graphically, give the nondimensional stiffness of the slab for varying slab proportions, wall spacing, and slab to wall lengths. An alternative value for the slab stiffness in terms of an El or an "effective width" may also be derived from the curves. The experimental results support the presented numerical solutions.
