Abstract:
An expression for the variation of reactions in a continuous reinforced concrete beam subjected to differential settlement is developed by taking into account changes in the modulus of elasticity of concrete, effective flexural rigidity of member, creep properties of concrete, and the shape settlement curve. Experimental resu ts showing reasonable of the time-agreement with the expression are presented. The use of the expression permits a more accurate estimate of the forces induced by differential settlement, which would be greatly over-estimated if some of the time-dependent effects are ignored.
