Abstract:
Arresting a landslide with a drilled pier soldier pile restrained by deep tiebacks was a first for the Texas Gulf Coast region. The tiebacks extended more than 150 ft (46 m) to sand. Before rational repair schemes were developed to arrest the slope failure, the potential failure mechanisms were analyzed and the failure geometry was determined. Several years of monitoring were needed to establish the failure geometry. The structural analysis, repair approach, and installation procedures are discussed in detail. In this project, the construction means and methods were the key to design once the failure characteristics and subsurface conditions are established.
