Abstract:
Discusses the design of reinforced concrete chimneys for both earthquake and wind resonant forces. The earthquake response is treated by solving the fundamental equation of motion with the forcing function being that of an accelerogram of an actual earthquake. Several accelerograms of strong motion earthquakes are used and a certain fraction of the average response is used in the design. In case of wind vibration, a sinusoidal forcing function is used which has the same frequency as that of the chimney. The paper emphasizes the importance of designing reinforced concrete chimneys for a maximum stress condition. This design procedure is necessary because of a rapid increase in steel stresses due to a relatively small increase in the bending moment. The rate of increase of the steel stresses also depends on the percentage of steel used; the higher the percentage the lower will be the rate of increase.
