Abstract:
For architectural reasons, columns are frequently omitted at corners of buildings. To support the loads, spandrel beams are cantilevered and rigidly connected at their intersections. Because of the rigidity of connections, both cantilevers are subject to bending and torsion. Torsional moments are troublesome and difficult to handle. Special precautions must be used, both in the design of these beams and in proper placement of reinforcing steel. This study presents an analysis of two right angle cantilever beams under varying load conditions. For ease in de-termining the bending and torsional moments at the end of cantilevers, a table of values is included.
