Abstract:
This paper presents a review of research papers dealing with the production of blended fly ash cements published since the 1980s. The effects of grinding fly ashes on their physical and chemical properties, and their effect on the properties of mortars and concretes incorporating the blended fly ash cements, are discussed. The production of blended fly ash cements produced by grinding portland cement clinker and fly ash together versus separate grinding of the materials followed by blending is described. The combined grinding of the portland cement clinker, fly ash, gypsum, and a superplasticizer to produce a blended cement is discussed, and reference is made to the optimum grinding processes and the production of high-volume fly ash blended cements. The paper concludes with a list of recommendations for needed research.
