Abstract:
Presentation is made of the result of Series I and of the ACI column investigations at Lehi Series I was a study of the end con 8 h University. itions of the columns and Series 2 of whether the holding of load for a short period would have any effect on the strain and ultimate strength of the column. The result showed that the end conditions had a marked effect on the strength of the column. The strains measured on the steel agreed well with those on the concrete. The average strength of the plain columns was approxi- mately 85 percent of the strength of the cylinders. The strength of plain columns tested with slow load- ing was slightly less than that with fast loading. For reinforced concrete the difference in strenqth due to method of loading was small. The Ion inforcement contributed to the strength off itudlnal re- the column an amount equal to the total yield point strength of the reinforcement. The spiral added a strength to the column equal to about 70 percent of the strength added by an equal amount of longitudinal steel of same grade as the spiral.
