Abstract:
Describes investigations at the University of California to determine the best type of cement for construction of Hoover Dam. Ninety-three commercial, and laboratory cements of wide range of composition were tested to determine principally the effect of chemical composition and fineness of cement on heat of hydration, strength, volume change, and durability of mortar and concrete. The effect of each major compound in cement was corn uted in the form of contribution factors. Strength ratio was shown to be a significant the property. Effect of variations in curing temperature on heat of hydration and strength were determined. New methods of measuring fineness and heat generation of cement were developed.
