Abstract:
Presents a method for the design of the concrete mix with respect to workability. A workability factor is developed which has a similar relation to the work- ability of the concrete as the water-cement ratio has to the strength. The author finds that for any given cement and water-cement ratio, this factor depends on the reiatlve quantities of cement, water, and aggre- gates and on certain easily determined physical characteristics of the aggregates. Instead of the original data on which the method is based, its validity is demonstrated by application to an independent series of tests. Examples are given of the application of the method to problems of design and to the selection of the proper aggregate, and attention is called to certain implications with respect to economy and quality.
