Abstract:
A total of 18 bridge decks with epoxy-coated reinforcement (ECR), constructed in Virginia between 1977 and 1995, were evaluated. The coating on the tested ECR specimens was in an overall good physical condition. However, the obtained adhesion values revealed concern for the long term corrosion protection performance of ECR in moist concrete environments. Significant adhesion reduction of the epoxy coating to the reinforcing steel surface was detected for the ECR specimens embedded in bridge decks four years and older. The total or partial debondment was not caused by the presence of chloride ions on the steel surface or excessive coating damage by the moist concrete environment.
