Abstract:
Serviceability of a concrete aggregate depends on the manner in which it joins with cement to determine the quality of concrete. Yet, standard ac-ceptance tests do not measure properties which are directly responsible for performance of aggregates enclosed in concrete; investigation are new methods of aggregate needed. Experience shows that petrographic study can supply valuable information on a routine basis, and that, wherever possible, ordinary acceptance tests should be supplemented by examination by a petrographer familiar also with problems of concrete. The significant properties of aggregates are discussed, and methods of petrographic study of aggregates are described. An extensive bibliography is appended and referenced in the text for the benefit of readers. especially petrographers, wishing to explore further the concepts treated only briefly in this paper.
