Abstract:
All concrete decreases in slump because some of the water reacts with cement and some is lost through evaporation. Although unusual loss of slump is normally measured only before concrete is placed, the loss can be of great consequence after concrete has been placed. Slump loss thus may have different meanings to the batcher, the ready-mixed concrete truck driver, the placer, and the slipformer. This is unusual concrete set, and studies indicate that slump loss can be explained in terms of the chemical reactions and physical changes leading to set. [Authors]
