Abstract:
The nuclear industry started its move into the commercial world with a strong conviction that a major failure of its system was intolerable and if a single failure was to occur, the nuclear power alternative would also fail. This article points out why a code was necessary and explains the overall scope of the code covering concrete reactor vessels and containments which was set up by a joint committee of ACI and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
